About the Exhibition:

Nancy Hamlin-Vogler is known for her expressive, abstract, mixed-media paintings that explore still life, landscape, and figurative subjects.  For this exhibition, titled Backyard Studio Kitchen, the artist chose to create still-life paintings of ordinary kitchen objects in unexpected configurations by bringing them into her backyard art studio. She explains, “I approach this work through observation and intuition, taking inspiration from fortuitous discoveries, my backyard studio, and memories of worldwide backpacking travels.”

Hamlin-Vogler began this body of work with a daily practice of painting the same kitchen objects repetitively while experimenting with changes to the vantage point, materials, and substrates. The artist elaborates that, “the resulting series is illustrative of how to push boredom to a point of familiarity, and then let it go.” This practice guided Hamlin-Vogler’s art practice in new and exciting directions.

The paintings in this exhibition teeter between realism and abstraction, combining objects and environments from different aspects of the artist’s life— allowing unexpected connections to surface as a unified composition emerges. Her gestural and intuitive application of mixed media materials such as paints, pastels, and charcoal, further bring these energized paintings to life.

About the Artist:

After completing graduate school and armed with an M.A. in French Literature, Nancy Hamlin-Vogler developed an interest in the silkscreen printing process and designed a line of cards known as Eastern Sun Printworks. The small company traveled with her in a family-inspired move from Colorado to St. Augustine, FL, where she set up shop in a funky commercial building near the historic downtown and ran every aspect of design, production, and distribution of her hand silkscreened greeting cards. Around this time, Nancy also began devoting time to her fine art career and enrolled in several painting workshops in North Florida.

Her works are featured in juried art festivals and galleries as well as in regional invitational exhibitions. Among Nancy's recent awards, her mixed media drawing, Strange Birds in a Quandary was accepted into the Woodson Art Museum’s acclaimed "Birds in Art 2023" exhibition. In 2022, she was chosen by the St. Johns Cultural Council to present a comprehensive exhibition at the Rotunda Gallery in the St. Johns County Administration Building. In 2020, she received a second Individual Art Ventures grant from The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, to explore the still life genre. She regularly exhibits at the St. Augustine Art Association and co-directs the Louise Freshman Brown workshops. She is a member artist at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery in St. Augustine.
