About the Exhibition
In Intermission, Tim Jaeger presents a new body of large-scale paintings that immerse viewers in the rhythmic movement of schools of fish—an ongoing subject in his practice that has reached a new level of scale, density, and emotional resonance. These compositions are not simply depictions of marine life; they are orchestrations of motion and pause, chaos and cohesion, individuality and collective experience.
Suspended in moments that feel both fleeting and eternal, Jaeger’s schools of fish become metaphors for the spaces in between—those quiet, often overlooked intervals where reflection, recalibration, and transformation occur. Like an intermission in a performance, these paintings invite viewers to step out of the noise and into a contemplative state, where time slows and perception sharpens.
Working at an ambitious scale, Jaeger builds each surface through layered gestures, allowing currents of paint to echo the fluid dynamics of underwater movement. The repetition of form—hundreds, sometimes thousands, of fish—creates a visual language that oscillates between abstraction and representation. From a distance, the works read as unified fields of motion; up close, each mark asserts its individuality, revealing subtle variations in color, direction, and energy.
In Intermission, the tension between the collective and the singular mirrors broader human experiences—community, isolation, momentum, and stillness. These paintings ask: where do we locate ourselves within the larger current? And what does it mean to pause, even briefly, within it?
This exhibition marks a pivotal moment in Jaeger’s exploration of pattern, scale, and metaphor—offering viewers a space to linger, to breathe, and to consider the beauty and complexity found in the in-between.
