About the Exhibition:
Longtime New Smyrna Beach resident Jimmy Lane is a world-class surfer, surf educator, and surfboard artist. For this exhibition, he presents a new collection of painted surfboards that reflect his deep connection to the ocean and the ways it has shaped his life.
As a former professional surfer, Lane rode waves around the world, advancing through the amateur ranks to the professional tour. With multiple championship titles to his name, he ultimately qualified for the World Tour. He later founded the Jimmy Lane Surfing Academy, which has provided instruction and mentorship to generations of aspiring surfers for more than 40 years.
While building his surfing academy, Lane also enrolled in college art courses, refining his natural artistic abilities through formal training. He soon established himself as a premier airbrush artist for surfboard builders along the east coast of Florida, earning a reputation for his distinctive custom board designs.
Over the years, he expanded his artistic practice by exhibiting painted surfboards and surf-inspired paintings at outdoor art festivals, including New Smyrna Beach's annual Art Fiesta, where he has received awards for more than three decades. Among his many honors is the prestigious Arthur Vos Purchase Award for Majestic Wave on a Surfboard, which is part of the City of New Smyrna Beach's permanent collection and is displayed at City Hall.
While the surfboards featured in this exhibition are created as works of art rather than for use in the water, they offering a unique canvas through which Lane can express and share his enduring connection to surf culture, the coastal environment, and the energetic beauty of the ocean waves.
