New Smyrna Beach, FL— Arts on Douglas is excited to start the New Year with a new alt_space exhibition by South Florida sculptor and installation artist Vanessa Diaz.  In this site-specific installation titled “The Original Purpose Has Slipped Our Memory,” Diaz reinterprets a variety of used and discarded objects by presenting them in new and unfamiliar contexts and environments to explore our behavior towards objects, associated memories, and what defines a place as ‘familiar.’  

This exhibition will be on view from January 7 through February 11, 2017. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, January 7 from 4 -7pm with light refreshments and live music by smooth jazz trio Tres Bien, featuring Ron Gilotti on the upright base, Tyler Rosenke on the drums and Billy Hutch on the guitar. An artist talk with Vanessa Diaz is scheduled for Friday, February 10 at 11am.  This exhibition, reception and artist talk are all free and open to the public.


Small Things Considered 2016 November 19 2016

New Smyrna Beach, FL — Arts on Douglas is pleased to announce the opening of its premier year-end group exhibition and holiday sale, Small Things Considered. This annual exhibition features original small-scale works of art sized 10” x 10” or smaller. The opening reception will take place on December 3 from 4-7pm and we will be featuring the smooth jazz stylings of Tres Bien, featuring Ron Gilotti on the upright base, Tyler Rosenke on the drums and Billy Hutch on the guitar. Light refreshments will also be served. This exhibition will remain on view through January 10, 2017 in our feature gallery.

New Exhibitions in November October 22 2016

New Smyrna Beach, FL — Arts on Douglas announces the opening of two new exhibitions for the month of November. In the Feature Gallery, a solo exhibition by central Florida abstract painter Audrey Phillips titled Open will be on view from November 5 through 26, 2016 with an opening reception on Saturday, November 5 from 4-7pm.   In the alt_space, a showcase of kinetic and static backlit collages by Susanna and Mark Helman titled Weatherscapes will be on view from November 5 through December 17, 2016.  The opening reception for this exhibition will also take place on Saturday, November 5 from 4-7 pm.  During the reception for both exhibitions, the gallery will be featuring classic reggae, soft rock and acoustic sets by the Funky Volcanoes, giving center stage to Andrew Elliot on guitar and vocals and Tyler Rosenke on the drums.

New Exhibition in October September 20 2016

New Smyrna Beach, FL — Arts on Douglas is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Earth Tarot: Past, Present and Future, by photographic artist Anna Tomczak.  This exhibition will be on view October 1-29, with an opening reception on Saturday, October 1 from 4-7 pm.  An interactive artwork Tarot reading will also take place at the opening, with image interpretations shared from 5-6 pm. Then, on Friday, October 28 at 11 am, Arts on Douglas will be hosting an Artists Talk with Anna Tomczak. All exhibitions, receptions and Artists Talk events are free and open to the public. Arts on Douglas announces the opening of two new exhibitions for the month of September. In the featured gallery, Orlando-based painter Robert Ross presents In Plain Sight: New Paintings by Robert Ross, on view September 3 - 24, 2016, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 3 from 4-7pm. In the alt_space gallery, Gainesville artist Victor Perez presents Funhouse, on view September 3 - October 15, 2016, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 3 from 4-7pm. Arts on Douglas will also host an Artists Talk with Robert Ross on Friday, September 16, 11am.

 Arts on Douglas announces the opening of a themed group exhibition entitled Endless Summer. This is the fourth iteration of the show curated by Gallery Director, Meghan Martin. The exhibition features 23 selected artists. Each work included in this fun, lighthearted show is an artist's interpretation of summer ideals, memories and/or sensations. The participating artists include Linda Amundsen, Marc Barrett, Hope Barton, Bobbi Baugh, Kelly Berning, Trent Berning, Donne Bitner, Heidi Edwards, René Guerin, Bryce Hammond, Jane Jennings, BJ Lantz, Joseph Palmerio, Christine Peloquin, Bridgette Rallo, Beau Redmond, Mary Schimpff Webb, Jo Sinclair, Wendy Tatter, Rose Thome Casterline, Trish Thompson, Anna Tomczak and Barbara Wagner. The exhibition will be on view from August 6 through August 27, 2016, with an opening reception on Saturday, August 6, from 4-7pm. During the opening reception, the gallery will be featuring classic reggae and modern beach music by the Funky Volcanoes, giving center stage to Andrew Elliot on guitar and vocals and Tyler Rosenke on the drums. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public.


Curators Talk July 09 2016

Guest curator Dr. James Murphy will give a talk entitled, “The Built Environment: Past, Present and Future.” He will discuss the ways artists have reacted to the rapidly changing urban culture over the centuries. The concept behind the exhibition and lecture was ACA Founder Doris Leeper’s conviction that the natural and man-made environments were one. She envisioned a future institute to study the built environment and contribute to its quality of life, a project never realized.


New Exhibitions in July June 24 2016

Arts on Douglas announces the opening of 2 new exhibitions for the month of July. In the feature gallery, a themed group exhibition entitled The Contemporary Built Environment guest curated by Dr. Jim Murphy will be on view from July 2 through July 30, 2016 with an opening reception on Saturday, July 2 from 4-7pm. We will host a Curators Talk on Friday, July 15 at 11am. In the alt_space, mixed media artist Cynthia Mason presents Implosion/Explosion on view July 2 through August 13, 2016 with an opening reception on Saturday, July 2 from 4-7pm. During the opening reception, we will spotlight the smooth jazz stylings of Très Bien; featuring John Pelligrino on the upright bass, Steve Busciano on the guitar and Tyler Rosenke on the drums. All exhibitions, receptions and events are free and open to the public.

How Flowers Taught Bees to Be Vegetarians

This guest lecture provides a unique opportunity to learn more about the impact that bees have on the floral world. Join us Saturday, June 18 at 11am for a casual yet in-depth conversation with our featured speaker, beekeeper Doug McGinnis, who will give a talk entitled How Flowers Taught Bees to Be Vegetarians. McGinnis' previous family business, Tropical Blossom Honey Co., had been collecting honey from beekeepers in Florida since the 1940's.  McGinnis has also served on the National Honey Board and the National Honey Packers and Dealers Association. New Exhibition in June May 24 2016

Arts on Douglas kicks off the summer season with a themed group exhibition entitled The Floral World Reconsidered guest curated by Dr. Jim Murphy. The exhibition features 19 selected artists. Each work included in this show is a contemporary interpretation of the role that flowers play in the changing global landscape. The participating artists include Bobbi Baugh, Robert Beck, Donne Bitner, Alexander Diaz, Mollie Doctrow, Lee Dunkel, René Guerin, Ed Harris, Michael Katz, Riitta Klint, BJ Lantz, Tim Ludwig, Audrey Phillips, Mary Schimpff Webb, Jo Sinclair, Wendy Tatter, Trish Thompson, Anna Tomczak and Barbara Wagner. The exhibition will be on view from June 4 thru June 25, 2016 with an opening reception on Saturday, June 4 from 4-7pm. During the opening reception, the gallery will be featuring The Treblemakers, giving center stage to Andrew Elliot on guitar and vocals and Tyler Rosenke on the drums. The Trebelmakers have been described as an island blend of reggae, mellow classic rock, funk and soul. We will also host a guest speaker, Doug McGinnis, beekeeper and ACA Trustee. He will present How Flowers Taught Bees to Be Vegetarians on Saturday, June 18 at 11am. All exhibitions, receptions and events are free and open to the public.
