About the Exhibition:
Joseph Palmerio is known for his impressionistic landscapes of the natural world. For this, his third solo exhibition at Arts on Douglas, he presents new work depicting both the expansive vistas and subtle details he observes in nature – from macro to micro. While Joe’s central focus for this exhibition is on the Florida landscape, he has also incorporated scenes from recent travels along the East Coast, including Cumberland, MD, and the Poconos, PA.
Palmerio regularly works en plein air, and his awareness of the constantly changing light and movement in his immediate environment can be seen in his gestural brush strokes. Palmerio elaborates, “I enjoy the spontaneity of a fleeting scene and the challenge of patiently studying my subject and distilling it down to its essence. Each stroke, borne out of maturity, has become the vehicle by which I express beauty and react to the elements that surround us.”
About the Artist:
Joseph Palmerio was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1949. He has been a resident of Sarasota for over 30 years and has been painting for over 50. He is a 1979 graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and studied at the Barnes Foundation in Lower Merion, PA. He also studied landscape painting with Louis B. Sloan, sculpture at the Frudakis Academy of the Fine Arts, and metal sculpture at Tyler School of Art, Temple University, all located in Philadelphia. He was an Artist-In-Residence with the Everglades National Park in 2003 and the Great Sand Dune National Park in 2011. He also conducted seminars and taught painting in community arts centers and developed workshops for physically challenged adults, including sculpture classes for the blind. In 2018, Palmerio led a painting workshop for veterans at Atlantic Center for the Arts.
