Audrey Phillips is back for her fourth solo exhibition at Arts on Douglas. Known for her abstract, gestural paintings, her most recent collection of work invites viewers to reflect on the delicate interplay between nature, life, and the unseen connections that bind us all. Her paintings explore these themes through intricate layers, expressive colors, and vivid contrasts.
Phillips elaborates:
“Art serves as a profound reminder of the secret and mysterious language that weaves through our existence on this planet. This universal consciousness is accessible to everyone, inviting us into a realm where the noise of daily life subsides, allowing us to experience a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us.
Whether it’s hiking through a lush forest or exploring a vibrant botanical garden, I immerse myself in places that elevate my soul and sharpen my senses. While many might think I capture countless photos or bring flowers into the studio for inspiration, my true source lies in my direct exposure to the interplay of nature’s light, textures, and colors. This sensory experience creates a profound resonance within me, allowing a unique dialogue to emerge between my inner self and the natural world.”
The abstract nature of Audrey’s paintings often compels viewers to stop and linger as they ‘almost recognize’ something palpable. Her hope is that the viewer will be drawn in by the complexity of the mark-making and evocative color and be able to experience nature through her lens. In this way, her paintings aim to facilitate a moment of transcendence —offering a welcome moment of renewal and healing in times of uncertainty.
About the Artist
Audrey Phillips spent most of her life in Florida where the landscape captivated her from a formative age. Observing the expansive sky and the far-reaching vistas of the ocean augmented her ability to see in the abstract and also encouraged personal reflection, making her strongly attuned to the beautiful intelligence and power of nature. Phillips recently moved to South Carolina, and is beginning to share her impressions of the natural spaces from this new environment in her paintings.
Audrey received her Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Florida. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in Minnesota, New York, Michigan, California, Texas, New Mexico, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, and South Carolina. Her work is in numerous United States and international corporate and private collections. In 2019, 54 of her paintings were acquired by the University of Tampa for permanent installation in their renovated Southard Family Building.
