New Smyrna Beach, FL –– Arts on Douglas opens the new season with Abstract Paintings, a solo exhibition featuring a collection of vibrantly colored acrylic paintings by central Florida artist, Chris Robb. The exhibition will be on view from September 7, 2013 through September 28, 2013 with an opening reception on Saturday, September 7 from 4-7 pm, and an artist talk on Friday, September 13 at 11am.
Abstract Paintings, Chris Robb's first solo exhibition at Arts on Douglas, features a collection of paintings that demonstrate the expressive and sensorial qualities of color and scale. Color is central to Robb’s dynamic compositions. His grasp of the formal properties of color––hue, value, intensity, and temperature–– permits him to layer multiple colors without overpowering the structure of his compositions. “Painting for me is an exercise in color relationship. At its core that’s what makes the painting work,” explains Robb.
Chris Robb has developed a signature performative style that draws attention to the tactile and physical pleasures of artistic marking making. "I am driven by rhythms and reactions to every mark made," the artist explained. His rhythmic gestures articulate a distinct visual language characterized by overlapping planes of color interrupted by assertive brushstrokes and dripping paint.
"We are excited to open the season with this bold and energetic show. The exhibition will offer large and small scale acrylic paintings on canvas, as well as unframed mixed media monotypes on paper.” explains Gallery Director, Meghan Martin.
Chris Robb graduated from the University of Central Florida in the spring of 1980. His artwork has participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout the U.S., including noted venues such as Club 57, NYC, PS 122, NYC.
In addition to painting, he has maintained a successful career as a creative professional. He is currently the Partner/Chief Creative Officer of Push in Orlando. He has been awarded visual arts grants as well as major advertising awards including Gold, Silver, and Bronze Lions at Cannes, CA Advertising Annual, The One Show, The Art Directors Club, Clios, Belding Bowls, MPA Kelly Awards and Gold Effies. His advertising campaign for United Airlines received an AICP award and is now included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His art work hangs in collections in California, New York, Florida and France.
In addition to the month long exhibition, Chris Robb will present a gallery talk followed by a Q&A session on Friday, September 13 at 11am. His presentation will include a slide presentation detailing his work, creative process, and influences.
The opening reception and gallery talk are free and open to the public.
