New Smyrna Beach, FL — Arts on Douglas announces the opening of an exhibition by Orlando based artist Chris Robb, titled Continuum. The exhibition will be on view April 2 - 30, 2016 with an opening reception Saturday, April 2, 4-7pm. The exhibition, reception and Artists Talk are free and open to the public.
Robb’s work deals with a purposeful reduction of expressionist techniques. He attempts to distill the technique down to it's very essence. However, his style is more complex in that there are competing ideas at work. He plays with multiple genres including expressionism, minimalism and pop art. Color and texture are central to his dynamic compositions. Hue, value, intensity, and temperature all permit him to layer multiple colors without overpowering the structure of his compositions. His most recent work adds in the use of assemblage to further bring texture and strong compositional elements to the pieces.
The title of the exhibition, Continuum, is by definition a continuous extent, succession, or whole, no part of which can be distinguished from neighboring parts except by arbitrary division. The mixed media pieces in the exhibition are all 36 x 36 inches. They compliment each other in that they seem to be sequential. Each piece is titled beginning with the word Continuum which they share with the title of the exhibition. For Chris Robb the tension in the use of combined genres drives the series. Of the exhibition, Robb states, "Continuum is an ongoing series of paintings all 36 x 36 inches. Within this repeated form is an ever evolving series of reductive, expressionist paintings drawn from my personal background of abstraction and graphic design."
