About the Exhibition

This special exhibition honors New Smyrna Beach painter Trish Thompson.  An original Arts on Douglas artist, Thompson recently passed away from a brief illness.

This display takes viewers through a range of processes, techniques, and subject matter that Trish Thompson explored at various points in her career as an artist, from watercolors created in the late 1980s to the abstracted, textural landscape paintings that she is known for today.

Thompson was strongly influenced by the Florida Landscape, its meandering rivers, tall palms, and open skies. About this influence, she once explained, “I was born and raised in the Florida panhandle, living near the gulf, on a bay.  There was always a lot of sky and water. And it always changed, the color, the texture, the light. I loved that. There was no way to make it be still or to describe the color. It changed moment to moment.”

Thompson was more than an artist; she was also an educator and mentor to many in the community. Arts on Douglas is honored to showcase this cross-section of her artwork as a tribute to an incredible woman, who was an energetic participant and supporter of the gallery since day one.
