On view: April 1-29, 2016
Opening reception: Saturday, April 1, 4-7pm
Artists Talk: Friday, April 28, 11am
For Joseph Palmerio’s inaugural solo exhibition at Arts on Douglas, he is presenting work created over the course of the past two years. The title “A Journey with Paint” references both his journey as an artist honing his craft, and a more literal journey. Joseph has traveled extensively throughout the US and abroad to capture his impression of the world around him; from the open vistas of the Everglades to the mountains of Pennsylvania; rural Georgia and Maryland, and idyllic towns in southwest France.
About his process, Joseph explains that his paintings are an ever-increasing attempt at simplifying a scene by first identifying the underlying shapes, and then building value and depth alongside elements of spontaneity that he describes as being “borne out of maturity, from years of practicing one’s craft.” He further explains that his brushstroke has developed over the years to become the vehicle by which he expresses beauty- with his work being more about his reaction to the elements than creating a literal interpretation of a scene.
