Giuseppe Corazzina, Angels and Demons
Opening reception: Saturday, October 5, 4 - 7pm
Exhibition dates: October 5-26, 2013
Artist Talk: Friday, October 18, 11am

New Smyrna Beach, FL –– Arts on Douglas will present Angels and Demons, a solo exhibition featuring the sophisticated abstract paintings of Orlando based artist, Giuseppe Corazzina. The exhibition will be on view from October 5, 2013 through October 26, 2013 with an opening reception on Saturday, October 5 from 4-7 pm, and an artist talk on Friday, October 18 at 11am. Both events are free and open to the public.

Angels and Demons is Giuseppe Corazzina's third solo exhibition at Arts on Douglas. The show features Corazzina’s most current body of large and small scale abstract paintings that explore his personal symbolism used to refer to the sacred realm. Corazzina explains: “While creating this new collection, I was intrigued to face a fascinating, and mysterious theme, which involved entering a world of emotions and sensations. I was guided by two relatively simple questions regarding angels and demons: Who are they, and what do they symbolize?"

Angels and demons are common figures and symbols found in many religious traditions, folk tales, artifacts, and popular culture. These figures often adhere to a strict division between good and evil forces; however, this dualism was not always so strictly defined in antiquity. Indeed, the word "angel" in Greek angelos, meaning "messenger," and the Greek word daimon, meaning "spirit guide" were used interchangeably. It was thought that everyone possessed a personal daimon, angel, or messenger. These messengers acted as intermediaries between humanity and the divine, uniting two separate dimensions of being into a new whole. Because these messengers bring messages from afar or beyond, from the realms where consciousness may not go, they can be both frightening and tempting at the same time.

For Corazzina, art is a synthesis of opposing modes of being. While creating this collection of paintings, the artist explains "I discovered inside myself the presence of lots of angels, but also more than just a few demons." Conscious of this experience of being, painting becomes a process of renewal and discovery, driving him to fervently research techniques, concepts, and themes from art history, and to experiment with color and abstract form. Corazzina's use of vibrant blocks of color in various intensities and his evenly paced brushwork provide evidence of his training in classical painting techniques. While his paintings are largely abstract representations of the imagination, recognizable objects do emerge.

Giuseppe Corazzina was born in Padua, Italy. He holds a PhD from Teacher College, Venice, Italy, a MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, Italy, a BA in fine arts from the State Art Institute in Padua, Italy, and restoration certification from Ca’d’oro, Venice Italy. He is skilled in the use of acrylic, oil, tempera, watercolor, as well as mosaic, encaustic and fresco painting. He has taught studio arts courses and fresco workshops at Cornell Museum, Crealdé School of Art, University of Central Florida, Rollins College, and Seminole State University. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. Corazzina’s work is included in the permanent collections of the St. Antonio Cathedral in Padua, Italy, Albignasego Church, Museo San Teodoro in Rome, the Church of Malawi in Africa, and the University of Central Florida.

In addition to the month long exhibition, Arts on Douglas will hold an Artist Talk with Giuseppe Corazzina on Friday, October 18 at 11am.

The opening reception and gallery talk are free and open to the public.

Opening reception: Saturday, September 7, 4 - 7pm
Exhibition dates: September 7-28, 2013
Artist Talk: Friday, September 13, 11am

New Smyrna Beach, FL –– Arts on Douglas opens the new season with Abstract Paintings, a solo exhibition featuring a collection of vibrantly colored acrylic paintings by central Florida artist, Chris Robb. The exhibition will be on view from September 7, 2013 through September 28, 2013 with an opening reception on Saturday, September 7 from 4-7 pm, and an artist talk on Friday, September 13 at 11am.

Abstract Paintings, Chris Robb's first solo exhibition at Arts on Douglas, features a collection of paintings that demonstrate the expressive and sensorial qualities of color and scale. Color is central to Robb’s dynamic compositions. His grasp of the formal properties of color––hue, value, intensity, and temperature–– permits him to layer multiple colors without overpowering the structure of his compositions. “Painting for me is an exercise in color relationship. At its core that’s what makes the painting work,” explains Robb.

Chris Robb has developed a signature performative style that draws attention to the tactile and physical pleasures of artistic marking making. "I am driven by rhythms and reactions to every mark made," the artist explained. His rhythmic gestures articulate a distinct visual language characterized by overlapping planes of color interrupted by assertive brushstrokes and dripping paint.

"We are excited to open the season with this bold and energetic show. The exhibition will offer large and small scale acrylic paintings on canvas, as well as unframed mixed media monotypes on paper.” explains Gallery Director, Meghan Martin.
Chris Robb graduated from the University of Central Florida in the spring of 1980. His artwork has participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout the U.S., including noted venues such as Club 57, NYC, PS 122, NYC.

In addition to painting, he has maintained a successful career as a creative professional. He is currently the Partner/Chief Creative Officer of Push in Orlando. He has been awarded visual arts grants as well as major advertising awards including Gold, Silver, and Bronze Lions at Cannes, CA Advertising Annual, The One Show, The Art Directors Club, Clios, Belding Bowls, MPA Kelly Awards and Gold Effies. His advertising campaign for United Airlines received an AICP award and is now included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His art work hangs in collections in California, New York, Florida and France.

In addition to the month long exhibition, Chris Robb will present a gallery talk followed by a Q&A session on Friday, September 13 at 11am. His presentation will include a slide presentation detailing his work, creative process, and influences.
The opening reception and gallery talk are free and open to the public.

More than Just Bling! – A Jewelry Invitational June 24 2013

Encore reception: Saturday, July 6, 4-7 PM
On Exhibit until July 27, 2013

Arts on Douglas, Fine Art and Collectibles is pleased to announce the extension of the exhibition “More Than Just Bling!”  Last month, Arts on Douglas introduced six extraordinary jewelers for the month of June.  Stefan Alexandres, Robert Farrell, Gabrielle Gould, Bridgette Rallo, Mary Schimpff Webb, and Barbara Umbel were personally invited due to their unique styles and distinction in the arts community.

“We were thrilled with the community’s response to our show last month”, explained Meghan Martin, Gallery Director. “The interest in the artists was so positive that we asked each artist to replenish their cases and remain on exhibit though the month of July. We will be hosting an encore reception for the artists on Saturday July 6, 4-7 PM.”

Stefan Alexandres designs poetic yet contemporary jewelry, with solid craftsmanship and design. Stefan is known for his alternative metal fabrication methods, and has broken new ground in creating his titanium jewelry.  The uniqueness of his work is based on his intuition for singular designs and starts with a pencil drawing ( no CAD). He works the metal directly without molds and is involved in every step of the process. Learn more about Stefan Alexandres at http://www.stefanalexandres.com

Robert Farrell believes that jewelry should quietly enhance a woman’s natural beauty rather than become a distraction from it.  With that in mind, his current body of work consists of simple forms with subtle surfaces.  The patterns are inspired by my admiration for Japanese graphics, African textiles, and the elegance found in nature.  The primary material used is sterling silver.  Robert does not use casting, plating, stamping, or any other mass-production techniques.  Each object is created from flat sheet metal and wire.  The surface patterns are created by either ‘hammered inlay,’ or true, ‘married metal’ inlay—a process in which different metals are fit together like a puzzle, and then soldered in place.  Learn more about Robert Farrell at www.farrellsilver.com

Gabrielle Gould uses feathers the same way many jewelers use gemstones.  Her work is an interpretation of the natural feel of coastal Florida and is inspired partly by the ornamentation of indigenous people. Each of her fascination works covey harmony in design, grace in execution and a sense of simple elegance.  Learn more about Gabrielle Gould at http://www.gabriellegould.com

Bridgette Rallo considers jewelry “wearable art” and approaches each of her pieces that way. She strives to create works that evoke a special feeling in the viewer or the wearer. Her work is strongly tied to the environment and incorporates both gems and minerals in her jewelry, as well as fiber, glass, shells, coral, primitive and ethnic beads. Learn more about Bridgette Rallo at www.greenwoodsstudio.com

Mary Schimpff Webb has been represented by Arts on Douglas since its onset in 1996. Her distinctive use of materials and techniques developed over her extensive career sets her apart from other jewelry makers.  Her wearable artworks are fluid, sculptural and textured forms utilizing unusual combinations of precious and semi-precious stones with gold, platinum, silver and wood. All of her works are handcrafted, including the gems she often shapes herself. Learn more about Mary Schimpff Webb at http://artsondouglas.net/pages/mary-schimpff-webb

Barbara Umbel loves walking the sands of Melbourne Beach, collecting colorful seashells.  Her fascination of their color variations and precise geometry has led her to her current works which are not only inspired by, but in part, come from the Atlantic Ocean. Learn more about Barbara Umbel at www.barbaraumbel.com.

An encore reception for More than Just Bling! will be held on Saturday, July 6, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  The event is free and open to the public and will be held in combination with the opening of Peter Abrami: New Paintings in the Atlantic Center for the Arts alt-space Gallery (located within the Arts on Douglas building). More than Just Bling! will be on display until July 27, 2013.
