Shrill Relish and Other Stories by Amy Fleming is a curious collection of abandoned objects March 03 2015

From the orderly specimen assemblages to the miniature domestic spaces, Shrill Relish and Other Stories is a curious collection of abandoned objects that reanimates life into long since forgotten artifacts. Her miniature dioramas of domestic spaces use a limited color palette, lighting, and distinctive points of interest to bring the past to the present. These tiny scenes are haunted by a residue of past activities—a half-eaten sandwich, a phone receiver dangling from a wall, a burning cigarette, a crunched beer can, a live television event. The scale and physical distance of the dioramas require viewers to move in closely to look at the details, highlighting the fact that the past will always separate viewers from the view. In her assemblages, animal bones, metal shards, and broken household items are suspended by wires like a wind chime. While wind chimes were used in ancient times to ward off malevolent spirits, Fleming’s constructions suggest that these artifacts might ward off the deterioration of memory.

Digital media artist turns postal barcodes into musical composition December 22 2014

Arts on Douglas begins the new year with a compelling audiovisual art installation, entitled Mail Barcode in the key of Bb, by digital media artist Tammy Knipp. The alt_space installation invites viewers to experience the multi-sensory processing of encoded and decoded information. Mail Barcode in the key of Bb will be on view January 3 through February 14, 2015. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, January 3, 4 -7pm. What does a postal barcode sound like? How does one "listen” to such non-aural information? These are intriguing questions posed by the audiovisual installation, Mail Barcode in the key of Bb by Tammy Knipp. The Intelligent Mail Barcode (IM Barcode) is a digitally encoded series of lines used to sort and track domestic mail. The encoded system consists of 65 barcode identifiers distinguishable by height––tracker, ascender, descender, and full bar. Using these visual identifiers and patterns as source material, Tammy Knipp explores the multi-sensory potential embedded in our information-driven world.

Right to Roam by Dana Hargrove October 25 2014

Arts on Douglas announces a new alt_space exhibition for the month of November titled Right to Roam by Scottish artist Dana Hargrove. Hargrove transforms the exhibition space into a landscape where artifice appears naturalized. Her abstract cairns use saturated color, forced perspective, and simplified shapes to create the spatial illusion of depth. The artificial landscape draws attention to the spatial and temporal nature of experience, enfolding viewers into a narrative that extends beyond the moment of viewing.
