The Lynching of Isaac Barrett

The Lynching of Isaac Barrett (1/15)
pigment print on cotton rag paper
20 x 13.5 inches

With over 300 documented cases, Florida had more lynchings than any state in the union. The one documented lynching victim in St. John's County, Florida was that of Isaac Barrett. I created this image in 2019, shortly before I became aware that a historical marker and plaque commemoration ceremony was taking place in the general vicinity where Mr. Barrett’s lynching took place. The day before the dedication, the historical marker was stolen but the powerful and moving ceremony took place despite the theft. Soil from this area was taken by local activists and the Lincolnville Museum executives to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama.
