Incorporated in 1888 and named for its situation “between the lakes,” the small town of Interlachen soon became a popular winter resort, boasting three fine hotels.  In the 1930s, trains carrying tourists arrived at the railroad depot every two hours.  Visitors to Interlachen enjoyed boating, fishing, and carriage tours of nearby orange groves. A caboose now stands in the town square as a reminder of Interlachen’s heyday as a prime destination.
