Cassadaga was founded in 1894 by a medium named George Colby, whose “spirit guide” sent him to Florida to establish a winter home for the Spiritualist community of Lily Dale, near Cassadaga Lake in New York.  In the early twentieth century, believers flocked to Cassadaga not only to communicate with the spirits of their dear departed but also to enjoy the mild Florida winters.  Soon the town became known as Séance City, The Psychic Capital of the World.  In recent years, the New Age movement has fostered a resurgence of interest in this small unincorporated town that still lays claim to being the largest Spiritualist community in the southern United States.  Even the town’s only hotel boasts some friendly resident ghosts.
