Artist Statement
My initial influences came from American Pop Art, particularly the appropriated and serially repeated images from popular culture.
I take those somewhat banal, commercial sources and re-purpose them through digital technologies in addition to traditional painterly techniques and transform them into something approaching high art.
Consequently, my process mixes several mediums, as well as stylistic conventions, usually within a single work. In addition to painterly handling, often there are machine-generated patterns, apparent repetitions, and abstract forms in combination with sleek photographic stereotypes.
This free-association collage of anonymous digital precision and hand-crafted, painterly expressiveness underscores the abrupt shifts of context evident in most contemporary art, to say nothing of those we encounter in our own lives.
