I am intrigued by patterns in nature and one of the features of Florida, as opposed to say, Utah or the Big Sur coast, is what we call the battle of the greens. As there is no elevation here, we as painters are constantly faced with whatever stands before us. The challenge for me with a painting like this is to make sense of the pattern, to give it a flow and a hierarchy, so that the eye moves from one thing to the next and doesn’t get lost. A painting like this is a close to music as I can get in 2 dimensions. I used this piece as a study for Sensu Naturae.
